SGT KOOLAID - The links don't work because DBSpot is down.

Well I've started making the first town in Quill3D so once that is done I can get going with making a new demo. I've also been doing some work on my FPS so you can expect a WIP post on that soonish.

Well I have made the main part of the main menu and I have made an ELB Software video to go at the start of any of my games. I've decided, as this is going well, to concentrate on this before the FPS. Back to college, well education as it is my first year at college, so work will slow but I'm getting there.

Happy birthday to me!
My birthday could have been ruined by my GCSE results...but it wasn't! 6 As, 3 Bs and 1 C. Well, I'm happy!

Menu finished now. On with the game.

Thanks. E-mail checked. Sorry but I haven't been on the internet for a while.

Progress
Tutopia is going well. As I said before I have an ELB Software Intro and a finished main menu which is pretty cool. As far as the game goes, I have been working on the first town; Lothrand (open to change as I suck at coming up with names!). The plan is there will be at least 3 towns. In the towns there will be a few things to pickup, the odd secret area and NPCs to trade with and receive quests from. From those towns you can enter levels. In the first town there are two; the sewers (Level 1) and Lothrand Castle (Last Level of the game). You can also head off to 2 other towns. There is a healer, a priest and a blacksmith to be healed, receive mana and upgrade weapons and armour. In the levels things will be platform based but with combat occuring. In combat you can't jump. Anyway, so far I have the level mesh and the level collision mesh done. I am using my own collision code and the player has idle/walking and bits in between animation. Camera is coded as well as jumping though it still needs as animation. NPCs are still too add as well as things to collect but first I am going to make the ingame menu.

This is looking good, but I thought it was odd how the grass was blockish above the path, and although night in the town is fine, it was far too dark and hard to see.

If you want some names, I can think of a few, but it's up to you if you want them or not.

Bizar Guy - I'll use some of them! Thanks!
Dom - Pics work here. Have you been able to see them yet?
The admiral - They aren't black screens. They show up better on some monitors than others. Once I get a demo out then you'll be able to see better.

Thanks. I'm finally having fun making this game again. For a while it felt more like ard work but now I'm just happy to be doing it whenever I can. The in game menu is getting there now. Once finished I will get on to finishing the first town off and getting it demo ready. This may seem really simple but I had to think about it for a while so I'll post it here in case it helps. The thing was that some of my game triggers and movement etc. were controlled by object animation.

More soon.

Just noticed we're on a new page! Wahey!
I now have the in game menu done. I also have made it so I can pickup new weapons and get both a difference in data and in visual. ie. you can see a different weapon. More news soon.

Oh yeah. If anyone feels like modelling and texturing some swords for me then let me know and I'll give you some concept art. If you want to design your own then that is great too.

Now added NPCs with flags so that they will say different things depending on what you have done. The flags are saved so the NPCs remeber what you have done. You can now receive your first quest!

Thanks both of you! It is nice to know people are still interested.
I'm now part way through the process of making it possible for the player to buy items and enhancements from NPCs. The healer can now heal you. All is going well except from the fact I can't program on weekdays till after college (about 3:45) and even then I have about 2 hours homework! Oh well! Once there is enough for a visual difference I will have some more screens and possibly a video. The demo will wait until there is something more playable.

I'm not making the game brighter if that is what you mean as the game looks fine. Once the demo is out if people still say it is too dark then I will brighten it. I would add a gamma option but that only works with full screen exclusive mode so that is out the window.

I've had to restart the in game menu to work with a more complicated game design. It could only handle one quest, one weapon and one suit of armour at a time so it is being redone much better.

Well the new menu is coming along really well. The main options, quest menu, and stats menu are finished and there is only the weapons, armour and inventory to go. Screens of that soon.

Thanks.

I thought I'd share some more of the design.

Weapons:
There are 10 different weapons. I'm not going to give away what they are as it will spoil the game. There are good points about all of them meaning that though the later weapons are generally better you may find yourself using an earlier weapon in some battles. Weapons have different number of slots for upgrading. New weapons will have all slots empty. They will have a base strength and base chance of a critical hit. Some even have either poison, regen or both status effects already. The upgrades you can get are:
-Poison: Any effected enemy gradually loses health through battle
-Regen: Each time you hit an enemy you regain 10% HP of the damage you inflict and 5% MP of the damage you inflict
-Sharpen: Increase the damage of the weapon
-Balance: Increases the chance of making a critical hit
If you make a critical hit then you do double damage.

Quests:
The game will be fairly linear (you are not free to go anywhere at any time). I plan to change this in Tutopia II (more on that later). Your quest list has the name of the quest, the location, who set it and some details. These can be updated as the quest progresses. As you may have guessed, early quests are shorter and easier and later quests harder and longer. You can save at any time except in battle.

I'll have some more stuff later as I have to go now.

Quote: "Tutopia II... yes. More on that later. I want to play this one first"

Yeah. I only mentioned as I've decided what I want to do with it.

Well the new menu has been hell to code but it seems to be working properly so nearly time to get on with the game play.

More info.

Armour:
Though I don't have any visual armour changes (at least yet) there are also 10 different types to collect. These have a base strength and some already have the anti-venom upgrade. Upgrades for these are:
-Re-inforce: Increases the armours strenth
-Anti-venom: Makes you immune to poison effect
You get upgrades for weapons and armour from blacksmiths.

Stats:
The stats used are:
-HP: Health
-MP: Magic
-Strenth: Increases damage
-Dexterity: Increases chance of making a critical hit ot avoiding damage
-Constitution: Increases max HP
-Intelligence: Increases max MP
Every time you level up you are given advancement points which you can use to increase strength, dexterity, consititution and intelligence.

Enemies:
Enemies will vary from area to area but some will appear in multiple areas; Nocturnites. The Nocturnites are the main enemy of the game. I won't give away the story much more than that. Enemies can be affected by poison as well as, some of them, affecting you with it. If you, or the enemy, has a regen effect every time you or the enemy hits the other they regain HP and MP. As you know, combat is real-time hack+slash.

More soon.

Well I couldn't be assed to UPLOAD them all one by one to uploadimages.net or similar. Sorry and thanks. If I find some time I may upload them singuarly later but I think haveing them in .RAR packages is better. You don't have to wait for each picture to load and you would have to download them all sperately.

Very nice! I like that menu a lot! There were a lot of quests it seemed, which is good! However, I think you should have things such as potions and armor and wepons only show the ones you're acualy carrying, so that the player has no chance of getting frustrated while trying to find the ones they actualy have one them, and the you could have a journal that lists all of the items, and as you get something, the information about it is filled out.

I noticed that the blacksmith has no anvils, or the healer any potions... but those are visual problems, and you shouldn't worry about them until everything ele it done.

Thanks. 12 quests I believe. I'm hoping for about 10-12 hours game play if you go for all the quests.

It is easy enough to tell what you have. You will know when you pick up a new sword which sword it is. The information about weapons/quests you don't have is filled out if and when you get them. I would have made it so it only shows the weapons/quests you currently have but I wanted the bits in different fonts and DB slows down loads when you change font so I had to fill in some info in paint.

Quote: "I noticed that the blacksmith has no anvils, or the healer any potions... but those are visual problems, and you shouldn't worry about them until everything ele it done."

Yeah I will put in extra graphics once everything else is done. Just a moment...that is about now! I'm planning to do the game level by level. ie. I will get the first level completely done before making the new place. Once I have trading with the healer and blacksmith done then I will finish off the graphics and get out a demo. Then I will make the first quest.

No it isn't night all the time. This is just screens of the same place in the game. Once I finish up the first town I'll get you some screens of the sewers.

Sorry for the disitnct lack of progress but I have been spending my time making a game for my sister's birthday. I'll probably release it here for the heck of it! It is a 2 player football game with some fairly decent ball physics which I made myself. I'm well chuffed as physics have always been a low point for me but I have two new programs using my own physics now. There will be more news once my sister's game is done.

To play the Devil's Advocate here, that is a lot of gameplay time! Are you sure? Most commercial games can be completed in like, 8 hours or so.

Just thought I'd poke that in - I know about the whole media thing you mentioned above, having media or not makes or breaks an idea often.

Very true. A lot of RPG's take at least 50+ hours. I think 10-12 is a good number considering that the game is made by UNO persons.

without offense, i think it's you that is taking 50 hours and more... I'm not saying that you're slow because in a certain way, you're right, if you want to have all secret, upgrade and all. The game that took me the most time to complete was KOR with 32 hours, I got all the thing you could have.

But back on topic, the game is still looking great andrew.

I think most rpgs have around 20-40 hours. 10 to 12 hours is a lot for a project like this, but it would be awesome if it has that many, as long as it's 10-12 hours of interesting gameplay. Not much left to say that hasn't been said until more progress is made.

Hope your sister likes the game you made her.

you're right, Bizar, 10-12 hours or even 5-7 hours of play would be very good for a game.
