I guess I'm thinking of stuff like Star Ocean till the end of time which is like 120+ hours. Things like Fable are shorter but then there is final fantasy tactics which is like 300+ and the elder scrolls games which are like endless if your like me and like getting EVERY secret weapon.

Thanks all. I'm still aiming for about 10-12 hours gameplay. I have now made it so you can buy stuff from the healer so once I do the same for the blacksmith and add chat with the priest and add in stuff like an anvil etc. then it is one with the sewer level.

Done the blacksmith! It was boring as hell to code but it is done now. Just got to finish the graphics then it is on with the sewers!

Sewers are a cool place to hang when you need some inspiration, but I must say the smell is horrible.

You enter the sewer through a man hole, right? And a sewer is always better when you have giant mutated sewer rats that have a taste for blood.

Go for 10 to 12 hours of game play. Hard isn't impossible, and this thread has been here long enough that it's obvious you're dedicated to finishing it.

Rats - Well...maybe. Mutated spiders are in but maybe rats.

I already have some; they were in the demo. Thanks for the offer though. As much as I know yours would be better, I want to keep the whole game in the same style instead of having most of the game with my useless models and then some amazing spiders. Sorry.

Hehe, no problem. I just also really want this game to be finished... Say, I suck at making the HUD (Inventory and crap), did you make that?

I agree except I only considered completing FF 7 once I beat Ruby Weapon which by the way takes FOREVER.

Yep! All in paint but I may improve it in Draw Plus 7.0.

Quote: "Keep up the good work! A blacksmith's you say? Have you got any screenshots to hand?"

Not at the moment, sorry. Will do soon once I finish off the graphics. Would explain a bit more but I don't wan't to spoil the game for you. I want to let you know stuff and keep the thread alive but I don't want to ruin the game.

I've started modelling the sewers and I have fully planned out the level so I'm working on that whilst finishing the Blacksmith's and Healer's places.

Ok. I have finished the graphics for Lothran now. I added the blacksmith's:
Anvil - Complete with sword and hammer,
Cooling bath - Complete with sword,
Furnace - Complete with coal, fire and smoke particles.
I also added the healer's:
Shelves - Complete with books and potions,
Cauldron - Complete with red liquid and cool magic particle effect.
I've done the first small part of the sewer so it is on to the next. This is progressing fairly quickly now. Will get some screens and movie soon.

Wait no longer! A warning about the video of the main menu...TURN OFF YOUR SPEAKERS! The sound recording on Fraps scewed up but the sound is fine on the others. Also, remeber that Fraps was running at 60fps whilst the game happily runs locked at 100+.

Screens:

Videos:
http://files.filefront.com/Moviesrar/;4270279;;/fileinfo.html

Demo will be out once the sewer is finished which should be mid-late November.

Cool!! It looks very nice, and I like the heads up.

Maybe it's me, but isn't 100+ a bit high to run you fps at? If this is how fast it runs on most computers then it's fine, but it seems high.

Just curious, but on like page 12, you posted some awesome screens of a level. What happened to that level, and will it be appearing in the game?

Ta very nicely!

My PC is:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
128-256MB RAM
Radeon 9600 128MB
It runs easily at that and about 120 if I wanted but hey! Once you try out the demo, when I get it done, let me know what frame rate you have as well as what PC.

Quote: "Just curious, but on like page 12, you posted some awesome screens of a level. What happened to that level, and will it be appearing in the game?"

I just looked on page 12 and couldn't find the screens so I'm not sure! I'll check again...

Ah! Makes more sense! No that level won't be in the game. I wasn't happy with it at all; it really sucked! There will be similar but better textured/layed out levels though.

Is anyone else going to check out the screens or videos?

Still looks nice Andrew. Did you ever add that delta thing? Also, My pc does 60 FPS max, and I know I'm not alone there, so you may wish to add it.

Surely it depends on the program as to what frame rate it can handle? Once I restarted the project it completely slipped my mind! I'll either add the delta thing or I will include a frame rate selection.

Nevermind. I can safely say thanks now!
I've made a fair start at the 3nd of the 3 parts of the sewer now so even though I couldn't code over half term I might get the demo out before December.

Thanks all! I'm hoping to get a bit done today but I have spawned a new coder; one of my friends. I've said I'll make him a commented example program to learn from. I won't be giving any more screens or vids until the demo comes out as I don't want to give away too much; I need to make sure people can see what they are supposed to do without hints and I don't want to ruin it for you.

I've now modelled and animated Tauron on a raft and have made the sewer scenery and player controls for this bonus level. I don't want this thread to die so I'm keeping it going. I just don't want to give too much away. When the demo comes out then I can give screens and more info.

Progress has been slowed by an odd occurence. My 6 year old sister approached me with near enough a full game design and asked me to make it for her! It is probably the most complete game design I have ever seen! Work does continue though - don't worry.

It is a 3D platformer based around, of all things, Golden Nuggets! Both me and her love our cereal! But seriously, she really has had a lot of ideas! If you want I can show you the progress on that as and when it is ready.

I had my first opportunity for a while to do some stuff today. I've been working on the magic system; mostly design but a bit of engine work. Whilst walking around the level you will be in one of two modes; normal or magic. (Hey! I just used two semi colons in quick succesion!) You change between by pressing tab. In magic mode the mouse will be visible and you will be unable to interact with normal interaction zones. When the mouse is over a magical interactive object a symbol will appear showing which of your magic spells you need to use on it. You can then select the correct magic by scrolling the mouse or pressing buttons 1 to 8. You then click on the object and it will be magic-icated-ified! You won't have all 8 spells from the start; you have to collect them. (Another semi colon!) In battle, when you change to magic mode you will go FPS stylee and get to blast monsters. I have tested this already and it was pretty damn fun but it isn't in the game yet. All of the spells require different amount of mana. Mana slowly recharges as you go but you can speed it up with a potion (already incorporated).

Here is a to do list before the demo will be released:
-Model levels
-Position objects/lights within levels
-Set up interaction zones and their reactions
-Set up NPC chat and trading
-Model characters
-Animate NPCs
-Animate enemies
-Animate character /
-Model/Animate environmental objects
-Create particle effects
-Combat /
-Basic control
-Menu
-Magic /
-AI

There is probably some other stuff but I can't think of it right now.

Well I had a good two hours to work on this today and it is really coming along. Blowing my own trumpet a bit here but it is looking pretty cool! I'll get some screens up soonish of the first section of the third part of the second level. Phew! Understand that? Well, expect more news and screens soon.

I am currently working on a function that allows the player to click on an area in 3D space and then the character will move in a smooth jumping arc to it. Pretty tricky for me anyway. At the moment it works as long as the selected area is on the same level or higher; if you try to jump to a lower area then he overjumps and the overjump increases with more height difference. Once I get that working I will release a video of it in action.

Here is the video. Incase you are wondering what the numbers mean:
X,Y,Z co-ordinates of player,
FPS,
Scancode().
The FPS is actually comfortably over 100 but Fraps killed it!
