Hey Guys, I have some good news.
I have fianlly fixed the 0fps problem. Turns out if was the stock FPSC stairs that were causing the problem. The stairs expose a massive poly leak within the game, thus slowing it down. On a positive note, I shall be putting a video together tomorrow and uploading on tuesday. The video shows the design and atmosphere of the level (I have taken all the scares out because i don't want to spoil anything). This will make a change from looking at 'still screenshots.

Stay tuned for the video

Hey guys,
Just a quick note to say that the video have been compiled and comes to 20.4MB. The video provides you with 2 minuites of DS goodness, showcasing the level design and atmosphere. I have removed all scares when filming the video due to i don't want to spoil anything. I shall be uploading tomorrow if I can grab some free time. The DL link shall be posted on the thread.

Now back to game dev. Im in the process of perfecting my light placement.

Downloading.

EDIT:

Get rid of the flashlight. Seriously. It ruins the professionalism of the game, by far. It blurs the center of the screen, and serves no purpose, as it doesn't really illuminate anything. I couldn't really look at your level design because of that.

@Inspire: Good point. I shall remove the flashlight, then make a re-compile of the video. This was, you will beable to see the level design better. Expect a DL link in a few days.

@ Everybody else:I am pretty busy this weekend with outside arrangements and work, but i will try and get some game dev time in, so expect some more shots very soon

Hey guys,
Sorry for the lack of shots. I fell victim to work and Battlefield 2-itis this weekend In answer to your questions, the flashlight will be romoved because as you guys said, it ruins the feel.

Quote: "I wonder, how will the next level be?"

Im not 100% on the location of the next level yet, but im thinking resi 4 style village. I have most of the neseccary textures, so it should be a blast. I just need to finish this level first.

@Styloo: Thanks mate. And tes, I do use LYTE:FX

Good point, i might do that some time.

Do you use multiple segments for each room? I mean, textures on some walls of the room look different than the others.

The screenshot loosk perfect, I can see that you are having problems with the paper casting shadows. Is there a way around that? It is impossible to get the papers just above the ground...

Hey Guys,
Over the last few days, I have been busy fixing a bug that caused all my lighting to default to it's normal values (in the cave level), so thats kinda annoying, but i think i may of fixed it all now. As for the current tunnels level, I shall be working on it all this weekend from saturday onwards, so i should have some progress shots up by sunday. Im a bit tired at the mo, so im just relaxing tonight.

Stay tuned for some more updates

Hey guys,
After a tiresome day of bug fixing (still have a few more to fix), i finally managed to knuckle down to some actual game dev. Attached is a WIP shot showing one of the ruined parts of the tunnels. Of course, there is still some work to be done on the lighting, I might lower tone depending on how I feel about it, becuase after all, Dark does not always equal scary, and it's good to have a 'few' brighter light rooms in horror games. But let me just say, Im planning some 'horrible' moments for later on in the level (im not telling)

@darimc: It's slightly brighter in the actual game. Screenshots allways come out darker. I will probably alter the ambience of this room, so it looks better.

Hey guys,
Attached is a shot taken from the gloomy storage/power management room. I think it came out quite well in my opinion. I still have a few illumination shaders to apply on a few objects, and a few dynamics to add, but I think the ambience really adds to the atmosphere. I shall be drawing this level to a close soon, which will then bring me onto level 4. Im letting out any secrets to do with future levels as of yet, but I might slip out a few things as the game gets closer to release.

Looks, nice. But the blue lightray is a bit odd. It doesn't have the same feeling as your other screens.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the comments. As for the lack of updates, my motherboard just blew sky high, so i have had to order a new processor, motherboard and ram. The parts should arrive on tuesday, and they should be fitted by wednesday/thursday, so i can then continue with my game dev. I have also just started a two week stretch of exams, so i might be busyier than usual. But after that, it's back to game dev. In answer to nakidno's question, there won't be another video posted for a while, and as for level 4.....well i haven't started it yet. I still need to polish off level 3, before i start work on level 4. Im not letting out any secrets to do with level 4 at the moment because i don't want to spoil anything....but don't worry i will do. And just to comfort everybody, NONE of my DS data has been lost during the comp disaster, so if all goes well, I should be back on track my mid/end of next week.

Updates coming soon

Hey,
Just a quick update note to say that my 'new year' suprise might have to be delayed ever so slightly due to my comp problems, but as soon as I get my PC parts on tuesday (and get them fitted), i shoud be back on gae dev terms again. Now...if you want to know about the 'suprise', you might have to wait ever so slightly longer, but Inspire might leak some hints lol.

Ok guys. Just to let you guys now that game dev will be delayed until monday, and no longer due to the guys who have got my PC needed to do a clean install of windows, due to some driver conflicts. As a result, I have asked them to transfer all my FPSC and DS files over to my new Hard Drive, so don't panic, I haven't lost anything I will be picking my PC up late afternoon on monday, and then everything should continue as normal. I would also like to appologise for he continuous no screenshot updates that hae been appearing over the last few days, I just wanted to let you guys know that DS hasn't gone down the toilet, and is still very much in production. All i need is my PC, then im ready to go!!.

the rest of my team have been getting very jumpy over the last few days due to me not having my PC, so i sent them off to work on audio and various FX that i shall be using in level 4. And what is level 4 i hear you cry. All im saying is.....it's the slums!!

Hey good ole buddy, COZ.
I've been "Gone" for a while and well seeing how all these problems rage on I will retire from your team. I do however have an offer for you in the future. My PC should have all the kinks worked out by the end of this month and I'll be back on the forums normally. I'll email you about it soon. Thanks for caring and if you need those models from Cheese, then ask him. He will give them.

Sorry if you feel I betrayed you. I feel bad that I could not be here for you.

Ok guys, a litte update. I got my PC back this monday, turned it on, and was annoyed that FPSC it's self hadn't been transferred over, but all my textures and programs had (although iv'e lost my signs VI reg details). But luckily, I had a full system backup of DS, and I only have to reconstruct a few rooms to get back to where i left off before my mobo blew up, so it's no biggie, but I still have one problem, and that is that FPSC has no sound. But hee's the catch, some of the doors play the opening sound, but the guns or enemies have no FX to them, but all other programs run fine?!? (this may be a issue with how my speakers are configured), but im not a 100% sure. On another note, my PC is being sent back in for a checkup tomorrow due to my processor was idling at 50 degrees at stock speed, and thats with a custom HSF, so their going to sort out the problem, and i might have the PC back by tomorrow afternoon, aslong as it isn't a hardware fault lol. I would be greatfull if you guys could help me out on my FPSC sound problem. Im using the latest version of V1.06 and my PC specs are as follows
M2N Dilluxe SLI ASUS Mobo
AMD 5200+ X2 processor
2GB of Geil PC6400 DDR2 RAM
BFG 8800GTS 320MB
5.1 Realteck soundcard

And don't worry, im not abandoning DS because of this. Ill fix the problem soon enough, and then it's back to dev!!

Thanks for your help

Sorry if I haven't read thoroughly enough, but are you on vista? Because fpsc calls on an older sound function somewhere in the system files that was only on XP. It didn't come with a directx update, only with Windows and it's updates, I found it online once but I forget where. I had the same problem as you.

@AaronG: Im on Windows XP, but I had to do a clean install on windows. I updated my video drivers to the newest ones, but im not sure if I have got the latest Direct X. But then again,if I didn't have the latest Direct Xm wouldn't FPSC tell me to go away and present me with a error message?

Ill try installing the new Direct X when i get my PC back (again)

Anymore suggestions?

@COZ - good luck with all that hassle. one thing i find new hardware is great, making sure its working fine is another.
Even though Im sure you would have tried any suggestions i could add, it could be a simple registry issue, or check to see if your sound drivers are the latest. Once I purchased a sound card, to find the driver cd was pointless even though it worked, updated the drivers and all problems fixed.
Good luck, and great to hear you didnt loose all of your work!
