Hey CoZ: You zipped up a game that you made with an offline registration in Phoenix. Let me send you a copy of Phoenix Advanced so you can have the latest Edition to use. Also, you can upload it to my servers...that file download site you used took me nearly an hour for 68MB.

I'm playing it right now. If it's okay with Coz, I can tell you how to play. EDIT: The password's in the readme.txt, duh.

You'll need to delete the prdat.bin file in the bin directory to play. That's CoZ's registration data for his computer.

Current Eval:
Music 5/5
Loading Time 3/5 (Average)
Loading Screen 5/5
Atmosphere 5/5
Lights/Shadows 4/5 (A bit dark for my screen, but looks good)
Segments 5/5 (Very Nice custom entities)
Entities 5/5
Performance 5/5 (33FPS continuous)
Fun 10/5 Dead on first obstacle. LOL

I'll update this after I make it past the first slopy thing.

You'll get a registration error. This is part of the Phoenix offline registration method. You can't install it, copy it, then install to another computer. It has to be from a clean install. Not much protection I admit, but offline protection has never been a secure way to protect software. Only online protection offers any form of real protection.

Go to the root directory of the game. In the bin folder, delete the prdat.bin file and restart. At the login, enter the password.

It wont let me take a screenshot for some reason, but it is a logo with 2 hazard style banners top and bottom with 2 metal pillars. It says run time error, please refer to the error.txt. Somthing to that effect.
Also a new .txt document has appeared saying
"Illegal Window: FolderView
Illegal Window: FolderView
Illegal Window: FolderView
Illegal Window: FolderView

Okay not a problem. This edition of PGPS must be v17 or older.

Right-Click on the game exe and create a short-cut. Drag the shortcut out of the folder and close the folder. Close all open windows on your desk. Start the game using the shortcut icon.

v20 doesn't do this because the protection method for windows starts later.

It works! lol.

Ok quick review:
Graphical Quality: 9/10
Really excellent, doesnt look like an fpsc game.
Music Quality/Sounds: 8/10
Spooky background music, sound effects also great. Some areas didnt have footstep sounds. Hopefully you have custom set soon.
Load Time: 8/10
Very quick, despite inital probelms with the loader.
Custom suff: 9/10
Some great looking objects and textures. Scary creature lol.
Gameplay: 9.5/10
Really fun made me jump 3 times!!
Overall: 9.2/10
All aspects of the demo where excellent, even though it was quite short. I think from what ive seen this could be fpsc's next big commerical title. Well done COZ.

Well, here goes nothing.

NOTE:

I was especially hard on this game because I see it as one of the higher quality titles around here.

Quick Review:

Graphics
- 9/10
Audio - 8/10
Load Time - 9/10
Level Design - 8/10
Lighting - 10/10
Custom Media - 7/10
Performance - 10/10 (33 FPS)
Gameplay - 7/10

Overall - 7/10 (Read my extended review for reasons why)

Extended Review:

Pros:

- Really nice atmosphere.
- Fantastic lighting.
- Illumination maps were great (what else did you put them on besides the lights?)
- Level design was incredibly realistic.

Cons:

- Archways seems unnatural.
- Spelling errors.
- The last scare (with the door and the guy who walks behind you) wasn't good
- Really short (hope your real levels are longer)

Bugs:

- The sign on the left wall in the first room: texture was backwards
- After you do the jumping thing, the sign was black. Happened again later on in the level
- Mack stood still after he spawned behind you, and kinda spazzed with his animations

Annoyances:

- Beer sign (Phoenix), is it under copywright?
- The computer screen on the table is a bit too cheesy (try putting a program onscreen or something, something less vibrant)
- When the light shines through the window (with the light beam decal), if you look into the window, it's pitch black
- Again, there are many spelling errors.

Overall:

I thought the game was fun, although extremely short. I think that you should think of some more creative scares, because most of those were the "sudden loud noise" and "enemy spawning behind you" ones. The illuminations maps were awesome, really made this game look better than others, and gave me the idea to do the same for Gone. I would give it a 7/10 because there were too many bugs and annoyances, but I can easily see this becoming a 9.5 or 10.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the reviews, time for some replying:
@Disturbing 13:
Quote: "Im getting the same error as phil"

Follow DarkFact's advice,it worked for Phil.

@phil17: Thanks for the awsome review mate

@Inspire:Thanks for the in depth review:

Quote: "- The last scare (with the door and the guy who walks behind you) wasn't good"

That was the scare that I mentioned in the readme,it's all screwed up. I will either fix it or get rid of it. Could you also sugggest some new scares I could use,due to you are limited to what scares you can do using FPSC. Your suggestions are greatly welcomed.
Quote: "Beer sign (Phoenix), is it under copywright?"

I shall check up on this. I have removed it for now. I shall only place back into the level if i am 100% it isn't copyrighted. Don't want any law suits lol
Quote: "When the light shines through the window (with the light beam decal), if you look into the window, it's pitch black"

I did this perpousely. I didn't want the user to see outside the main level, due to they would be able to see the level geomatry, and it would ruin the feel, and i thought building a outside scene just to suit the look of that small window would be a waste of polys and a overkill. Having another visible room would look unrealistic also due to lightrays only form is the surrounding area is dark, not brightly lit,but ill see if i can sort it out
Quote: "The computer screen on the table is a bit too cheesy (try putting a program onscreen or something, something less vibrant)"

All ready sorted
Quote: "Again, there are many spelling errors."

Soted that out as well. This is why i only released it as testers only
Quote: " really short. hope your real levels are longer"

They will be,don't worry

NOTE TO TESTERS WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED
here is a new compile that uses V20 of PGP. It fixes the issues that D13 was/is having
[href]http://www.phoenix-sentry.com/demon_sun/DemoSunDemo.zip [/href] It's also on a faster server.

Password key for demo:a2c88dd9-6a16-42a3-ae9c-9-ad04-9f74-794
(other people can DL it if they want)

Saty tuned for more shots/updates guys

Hope stoopid enjoy the demo

Lights/Shadows 4/5 (A bit dark for my screen, but looks good)
Segments 5/5 (Very Nice custom segments)
I was expecting some lag from the cave segments, but I got 33FPS all through the demo!

Entities 5/5 (Not too many, just enough.)
Performance 5/5 (33FPS continuous)
Fun 10/5 Dead on first obstacle. LOL

I figured how to get up the slope. It was tricky at first, but I made it. The surprises were placed nicely and I made it to the end quickly.

Since you will be using Phoenix v20, the key mapper makes your "Use the Enter Key" image obsolete. So that could be changed to "The Use key Opens this Door" or whatever.

Overall, I was left wanting more. In fact, I'm playing again right now. Maybe it'll be longer this time.

Downloading...

Quote: "Could you also sugggest some new scares I could use,due to you are limited to what scares you can do using FPSC."

I never worked with FPSC, so I don't know if it's possible, but I love this mirror-shock-moments.. For instance the player is in an empty bathroom, then he looks in a mirror and sees an enemy attacking him, you know. The same situation could be made with a security-camera or so.. like the player goes to a screen, then he sees himself being recorded by a camera in the same room, and then an enemy coming from behind.
However, I will post my feedback later today, if possible.

Edit: The error.txt sais:

Quote: "04.09.2007 22:33:34btnContinue Positioning: Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow.
04.09.2007 22:36:20btnContinue Positioning: Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow.

04.09.2007 22:38:21btnContinue Positioning: Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow."

I read the last side of this thread but the other testers seem to have (or had) other problems.. any idea how to get around the problem?

@ Mr. Kohlenstoff:

Not possible.

@ CoZ:

I'll think of some scares and email them to you.

Also, about the window, you should at least put some stars in the blackness.

I'm stunned you sent me a beta demo. I haven't really been following this thread, mainly because it's so damn big! But thanks!

So...

creepiness: After that zombie attack (once again, love the trucker zombie) I was on my toes a lot more. Dark pockets in rooms had me in a state of paranoia (especially seeing how I used up all my ammo) Before the attack, I was pretty much strolling through the level. It takes a lot to scare me, but the atmosphere seems promising. Make the hairs of your neck constantly on edge.

gameplay/level design: The zombie wasn't as easy or predictable as they so often are. While it may seem a bit cheap spawning it right next to you, it makes for a pretty tense shootout. That slanted arch near the start was hard clambering over the first time. I'm somewhat dissapointed that it was so linear. There's so much incentive to explore, yet this isn't implemented much. The level design is great though. Everything flows together so well, the lighting is placed to build curiosity and urgency in the player (for example, a dark pocket you must travel through to reach a door) And also making the level look better from spectators viewpoint. The rooms are claustrophobic and varied and have neither too many nor too few entities. Entity placement just feels right, as if it's supposed to be there. However, I didn't see any of the blood trails or debris paths that were hinted at. Also, the level was too short, yet it was so well constructed it's hard to hold that against it. On the other hand, it's hard to build immersion when the game ends before it kicks off. Buuut...it's a demo, so who cares?

what else? Loading took a while, but I'll forgive that for now. The sound on the loading screen was good, it's really a shame that low-key rumbling wasn't played throughout the game. There didn't seem to be enough sound in-game to immerse me, but where it was used, it went off without a hitch. Overall, a well crafted and enjoyable, fairly tense game. While linearity leaves something to be desired, you never complain about walking that line. Immersion is what this lacks though and if the player could become more immersed, it would set the scene for some of the creepiest moments seen in FPS Creator.

My thougts on Demon Sun

Graphics - 10/10
There is a great blend of media that all fits together nicely. As commented before if I didn't already know this was FPSC, I wouldnt.

Audio - 8/10
Music was great for the mood and such even with loading screens and such. Some of the scares sounded good but kinda got annoying, but don't get me wrong, they did their job.I'm just glad i have good bladder control, lol.

Load Time - 8/10
Load time was a bit much for the level size, but unlike allot of games I test, it was honestly worth the wait. There is a an acceptable wait time for a good product and you definitely meet this criteria.

Level Design - 9/10
I was impressed with the layout. It was believeable and made me feel this is the way this place was left. It left me wanting more.

Lighting - 10/10
This is some of the best lighting I've seen in an FPSC game and I think this is the big reason it doesnt feel or look like a 'standard' FPSC game. I wish you could do a tut on lighting lacement and use, because this was impressive.

Performance - 8/10
The game itself was great, but no fault on your part there were random spots that dropped to 9fps, unfortunately these were critical spots or sopt where paper was in my face , i was grabbing a key and...being suprised. I unfortunately didnt see any reason for the lag, so i'll chalk it up to FPSC petering out on ya.

Gameplay - 9/10
I look forward to more installments. But i did see a few changes that could be made with the sightjacking and scares.(wich we have discussed so i wont ruin future installments with any further comments)

Over all I give it an 8.5 of 10 -Keepem coming

Load Time -8/10 (average)
Level Design - 9/10
Lighting - 10/10
Custom Media - 8/10
Performance - 9/10 (33 FPS)

Sorry I couldn't test sooner but... I've had some issues here lately. Well anyways... here it goes.

Music 5/5
Loading Time 4/5
Atmosphere 5/5
Lighting 4.5/5
Segments 5/5 (Very Good custom segments)
Depthness 5/5
Framerate 32-33

Very fun. I don't get scared easily but those scare tactics, I could say, would work on the weak minded.

Overall- 4.8/5

Very nice!

Hi guys,
thanks for all the reviews. I have now taken all the suggestions that I have heard, and am re working the level. I now have some more scare tactics up my sleve, along with a new twist on the sightjacking system. I might relese the revamped version when it is done.

Stay tuned for more updates

Hi guys,
Attached is a WIP shot showing part of the new sightjacking. This is taken from a creature stalking you...watching you from accross the Chasm. The sightjacking is now used to show stalking enemies or hidden/important items. I shall hopefully be adding some red footprints on some shots to represent 'creature vision',to give the illusion that the creature is following the players trail. If anyone could attept to make a neon red footprint for the sightjacking,I would most greatfull, due to all my footprints so far have sucked.

Let me know what you think of the new style
